What is a Community Writing Workshop?
Because we believe that writing matters—and the writing world should be a broad, inclusive community that represents the stunning diversity of individual minds— AWC sponsors free writing workshops across the state of Alabama.
Our goal is to support the educational programs happening at the grassroots and make those opportunities more visible to the public.
An AWC Community Workshop meets the following conditions:
It is free. In other words, no one has to pay to attend (though some workshop leaders may offer books and additional products for voluntary purchase at these events).
It is located in Alabama.
It is open to the public. In other words, anyone (not just AWC members or friends) can attend.
AWC will promote and encourage your efforts in the following ways:
We will post any approved Community Writing Workshop to our website calendar and share it in the email newsletter.
We will announce the event in various social media spaces and focus on target audiences.
We will help you create a visual poster for your marketing materials.
We will connect you with other members of the Alabama writing community that might be interested in supporting, attending, or promoting your workshop.
In return, AWC asks only that workshop leaders introduce and encourage their workshop participants to explore and to consider membership in the Alabama Writers’ Conclave. It is our hope that AWC can serve as a hub and haven for writers at all levels of their writing journey.
Who can apply?
Any current AWC member can apply to create a brand new AWC-sponsored workshop directed at building literary skills and knowledge in Alabama.
Members can also apply for AWC sponsorship of pre-existing workshops. For example: Vanessa offers a free poetry workshop once a month at her local library. Vanessa wants to make this workshop more visible to community members who would benefit from this free event and mentoring. Vanessa submits her poetry workshop using the form below. AWC Board Member Karim Shamsi-Basha reviews the form and approves the workshop. Then Vanessa receives publicity materials from our Publicity Team and has a wonderful day.
